“Being a GC can be a lonely place to be… without anyone you can vent to, or chat to. Everybody I’ve met at the event today is in an identical position. It’s been fantastic, brilliant.”

Nicola Frost General Counsel ANS Group

Last week’s Workgroup Legal Leeds was Yorkshire’s first ever proper event for General Counsel and Heads of Legal.

My ambition for this event was to create the place where Yorkshire’s GCs meet, where they can get together in a sales-free environment, and spend time with other General Counsel, who share identical issues, and face the same challenges, day in, day out.

But some of you missed it! 😱

So, because I am a lovely person, I spent a lot of money on a videographer and convinced a handful of GCs to be interviewed, to make sure you clear your calendar for the next Yorkshire event!

You can watch the highlights video at the bottom of this page 👇 for the lowdown on what it’s like to be a part of Yorkshire’s very own GC community…

But first, some more testimonies from the General Counsel who attended…

“Here in Yorkshire, most events are put on by private practice firms, which are informative and useful, but don’t have so much of an opportunity to speak to other General Counsel, whereas with the workgroup format which sparks conversation and ideas, and lets you know you’re not alone as a GC.”

Ben Thornton Group Legal Director Unipart Group

One more???

“It’s great to have a place where GCs can talk about common issues, without it being a marketing event, without being sold to. It’s a genuine, authentic place for GCs.”

Farah Wilson Chief Legal & Governance Officer Wealthify

Last one, I promise!…

“If you attend one session this year as the leader of an in-house legal team in the North East or Yorkshire, make sure it is this!”

Liam McDermott Legal Director Taylor Wimpey

From every GC I spoke to at the event, the thing I heard most was, “I thought we were well behind on X, but turns out everyone is in the same boat!”

I think it is immensely important for GCs to get the opportunity to step out of their day-to-day and spend time with others, so they realise they are all in the same situation as people they are now connected with, and who they can now rely on for ideas in the future!

Before leaving you to watch the video below, I’d like to thank again the GCs who ran the show on the day 🙏, as well as the organisations who partnered with me on this event to make it a reality - BCL Legal, Brabners, Walker Morris, Mills & Reeve and Lewis Silkin 👏.
